Australian delivery platform Shippit continues international expansion, launches into New Zealand
- Shippit powers hundreds of millions of deliveries on behalf of thousands of retailers in Australia, including Kmart, Chemist Warehouse, Temple & Webster, and Coles
- Existing customers in New Zealand include local retail icons Spotlight and Freedom
Sydney, Australia, 3 July, 2024 - Shippit, the industry-defining commerce delivery platform that powers deliveries for 4,000 retailers across APAC, today announces its formal expansion into New Zealand. Shippit’s New Zealand operation will be led by Head of Market Development, Sofia Newcombe, supported by a team of 30 - across Research and Development, product, shipping operations, customer success and sales - servicing the country.
Shippit already counts Spotlight, Freedom, Harvey Norman, Swanndri, Kathmandu and Accent Group amongst customers in New Zealand. Through its expansion, Shippit will allow retailers - from national enterprise businesses to family-run bespoke stores - to enjoy discounted rates from a comprehensive carrier network that covers +95% of the country’s parcel volume. Shippit’s network of carriers includes NZCouriers, Aramex, NZPost, Post Haste, Uber and many more. This enables customers to reduce their reliance on single carriers and enhance the post purchase delivery experience, for more customers in more postcodes on both islands.
“Today is an extremely exciting day for Shippit, as we formally expand into New Zealand - a market we’ve admired from afar for a long time. Expanding into New Zealand, where we already count leading retailers like Spotlight and Freedom as customers, is a very natural step for us as we seek to become a truly ANZ platform,” said William On, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Shippit. “Like Australia, New Zealand is an entrepreneurial, proud and innovative retail market. Our arrival comes at a pivotal time, though, as retailers prepare to compete against foreign retail entrants. Delivery has a genuinely causal effect on loyalty, and through our platform, we have the opportunity to power the next generation of retailing here just as we have done in Australia over the last decade.”
To power a New Zealand retail market that is anticipated to generate $8.44 billion in revenue by the end of 2024, Shippit’s strategy will focus on forging alliances with key partners on key priorities. This includes diversifying delivery options through same-day or on demand deliveries, providing new optionality for bulky deliveries, expanding international delivery channels, and supporting retailers with owned fleets.
Shippit’s launch in New Zealand comes as the battle to win shopper loyalty intensifies. Today, only price trumps delivery when it comes to the factors that influence what brands shoppers engage with, according to Shippit and Jarden research. Meanwhile, four in five (78%) Australians said the post-purchase experience was either very or extremely important, while 62% would be less likely to return to a brand if their delivery experience was poor.
“eCommerce is such an important foundation for our business today. As consumers, we understand firsthand the frustrations that can come with a poor delivery experience. We don’t want our customers to ever feel that,” commented Paula Mitchell, Digital General Manager at Freedom. For us, we want delivery to be more than the end of the customer journey; we want it to be the start of our customer retention strategy. Through Shippit, we’ll be able to meet and exceed our customers’ expectations, through a delivery experience that they’ll remember, recommend and return for.”
Clare Taylor, Online Operations Manager, at Spotlight, added: “We’re thrilled to partner with Shippit, and usher in a new era of convenience and value for Spotlight customers across New Zealand. eCommerce is an important growth channel, but to truly take advantage of that it’s essential that delivery meets and exceeds our customers’ expectations. We, like Shippit, believe wholeheartedly in the power of quality delivery for reasonable cost and its impact on loyalty. Our customers deserve quality at the lowest price however they engage with Spotlight, in-store or online. Now, through Shippit, we’ll be able to provide the delivery experience that they expect.”
Key features of Shippit’s platform include:
- Comprehensive Coverage: For +95% of New Zealand’s parcel volume and deliveries across North and South Island.
- Bulky Deliveries: Support for bulky deliveries up to 50 kgs, including the ability to ship bulky goods overnight, so retailers can diversify product ranges.
- Delivery Optionality: Multiple delivery options, including Standard, Express, and On-demand delivery with leading carriers, to power delivery choice and increase cart conversions.
- Smart Allocation: Ready-to-go carriers and smart carrier allocation, enabling retailers to add carriers rapidly and stay in charge of which carriers are allocated, whether it’s cheapest, fastest or based on their own custom rules.
- Expert Support: Access to logistics consulting, carrier account management, and delivery support from in-house experts.
New Zealand represents the latest in Shippit’s global expansion plans. In October 2022, Shippit announced the acquisition of Southeast Asian start-up, Luwjistik, as it formally expanded into the burgeoning Asian eCommerce market. Through that acquisition, Shippit now has a team of 50, including localised R&D and back-office teams, in Singapore.
Over 100 million deliveries are booked through the Shippit platform every year. Since its launch in 2014, nearly $30bn worth of ecommerce orders have been fulfilled through Shippit’s platform, on behalf of thousands of retailers including Kmart, Cotton On, Coles Liquor, Total Tools, Temple & Webster.
